The Carver Preserve is primarily 189 acres of mangroves on Pine Island along Big Jim Creek. This large mangrove area connects to State and Calusa Land Trust conservation lands to the north. With this acquisition, the entire Big Jim Creek inlet is now protected by conservation land. The Calusa Land Trust will contribute $5,000 toward the purchase price and has offered to assist the County with management of the preserve.

This acquisition is the fourth Conservation 20/20 property to be honored in the Legacy Program. The Legacy Program was created as an initiative to attract quality nominations. A Seller of exceptional conservation land may petition the County for naming rights of the new preserve. The petition must be approved by the CLASAC and BoCC. Through the Legacy Program, this preserve has officially been named the Carver Preserve, in honor of Jack C. Carver, MD, who taught his family the importance of preserving natural environments for future generations.
