This 126 acre preserve has 2.8 miles of coastline and is located in the extreme northwestern corner of Lee County. CPP is is surrounded by Cape Haze, Charlotte Harbor, and Gasparilla Sound. The northern most tip of the island is located in and owned by Charlotte County.

Archeological sites on Cayo Pelau Preserve show that historically this site has been used by Native American Indians. Mangroves cover much of the island which is primarily a tidal swamp. The vegetation is thick with the exception of three small beaches along the northwestern coastline.

The main focus of restoration activities will be on exotic removal. A thin strip along the northwestern coastline of the preserve has been invaded by Brazilian Pepper and a couple of other exotic species. Otherwise the vast majority of the island is in its natural state.
