Hickory Swamp Preserve (HSP) is 66.5 acres in size and was acquired in 1999 by the C20/20 Program. HSP is located in eastern Lee County, in an area commonly referred to as Buckingham. The Preserve is west of Buckingham Road and on the south side of Peace Road. The Preserve is located less than 1 mile southwest of the Buckingham Community Center. The 66.5 acre site is surrounded by agricultural lands to the north, east and west and the state operated Gulf Coast Center to the south.

The primary natural plant communities found at the Preserve are mesic and hydric hammocks and mesic flatwoods. There are also two depression marshes and a several disturbed areas including improved pasture. Impacts from cattle operations have disturbed much of the Preserve; however 100% of the site has undergone initial invasive exotic plant removal efforts. Fire was re-introduced to portions of Hickory Swamp Preserve in 2003 and again in 2005. Prescribed burning is an important restoration activity that benefits many Florida plant and animal species.

The Land Stewardship Plan (LSP) for this Preserve outlines a primitive marked trail system (see LSP for more information).
