Smokehouse Bay Preserve
Smokehouse Bay Preserve is located near Bokeelia on the eastern side of Pine Island. Portions of this preserve were previously being used as a palm tree grove. Much of the rest of the preserve is a tidal swamp filled with mangroves and several exotic species.
The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Stimulus) and the Charlotte Harbor National Estuaries Program provided the funding for restoration including removing palms in the palm grove, regrading the rows and furrows, treating exotic invasive species, and back-filling half of the mosquito ditches on the site. These efforts resulted in a better functioning and more natural ecosystem.
This site is very difficult to get to and is in the middle of restoration therefore public access is currently restricted.
