2013/2014 - Pine Tree Thinning & Melaleuca Removal Projects
While keeping our Lee County residents & visitors informed, as part of our on-going restoration efforts to continue improving our conservation lands, please click on the 2013/2014 Pine Thinning document to learn more about:
1. the science/reasons behind these types of projects and why they are an important management tool,
2. see before & after photos from a similar past project area, and
3. learn the location of the six preserves that are next in-line for pine thinning/melaleuca removal.
This project is scheduled to begin sometime during the fall season, after the rainy season has ended and the areas dry down enough to allow access.  Questions?  Please contact the preserve's site coordinator for additional information.

Prescribed Burn Planned for Prairie Pines Preserve
A prescribed burn is being planned for Prairie Pines Preserve. Staff waits for a combination of the appropriate weather, staffing, and equipment before conducting a prescribed burn.

Galt Preserve Closes to the Public During Construction
Melaleuca removal
There is a lot going on at Galt Preserve.
A contractor is currently onsite creating the trails and amenities for the public entrance off Stringfellow Road.  During this process the preserve will remain closed to the public due to safety concerns.  Construction is expected to take approximately one year.

Pine Island Flatwoods Preserve Closed After Wildfire
Pine Island Flatwoods Preserve is now temporarily closed due to a Thursday afternoon (July 24th) wildfire that began after a lightning strike. The wildfire is 100% contained and covered 90 acres. The hiking trails will remained closed through the weekend because of potential hot spots and lingering smoke issues.

Please check the C2020 website next week for updated information on when the trails will reopen to hikers.
